Local Businesses and TWC Partner with Silsbee High School to Boost Career Skills for Opportunity Now Students
October 18, 2024 – Silsbee High School, in collaboration with the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), Workforce Solutions, and local businesses, is providing students in the Opportunity Now program a chance to gain hands-on work experience through the Paid Work Experience (PWE) program. This initiative equips students with essential skills that will prepare them for life beyond high school.
Currently, seven Opportunity Now students are participating in the PWE program. As part of the process, they created resumes and posters showcasing their skills and personal stories. Employers from Tiger Hut, The Silsbee Chamber, Silsbee Public Library, Boys and Girls Club, SSC, and Kat’s Korner were on hand to interview students directly, matching them with opportunities that align with their strengths and the needs of the businesses.
Michele Drake, Silsbee ISD District Transition Coordinator shard her passion and commitment for the program:
“As a teacher at SISD since 2012, and for the past three years as the District Transition Coordinator, I’ve witnessed firsthand the difference this program makes. Over 100 students have thrived thanks to our partnership with Opportunity Now and TWC-VR. My drive for this program comes from wanting more for our students—more opportunities, more independence, and a sense of pride in contributing to their community.”
The PWE program pairs businesses with students for up to 20 hours per week. During the 12-week period, the TWC covers the student’s wages, allowing them to gain meaningful experience at no cost to the employer. After the 12 weeks, businesses have the option to offer the student permanent employment.
Opportunity Now provides students at Silsbee High School with essential pre-employment services, including resume writing, interview preparation, professional communication, conflict resolution, and even college application assistance. The program’s goal is to ensure students are not only ready for the workforce but also prepared for college or the military, offering a solid foundation for their post-secondary lives.
"This program opens doors for students giving them a real shot at being College, Career, and Military Ready (CCMR) by the time they graduate. We also track their progress for up to two years post-graduation to ensure they’re on the right path,” said Drake.
Silsbee ISD is excited about the future of this program and grateful for the ongoing support from local businesses, TWC, and Workforce Solutions. These partnerships are instrumental in helping students succeed beyond the classroom.
