Matthew Ard Represents Silsbee at Prestigious Texas Boys State

Austin, Tx, June 2024 - Matthew Ard, Silsbee High School, proudly joined the ranks of Texas Boys State as the newest delegate, sponsored by American Legion Post 72 of Lumberton. In June, Matthew along with hundreds of Texas’ young men gathered at the University of Texas at Austin for Texas Boys State, hosted by the American Legion, Department of Texas.

During the week-long event, the delegates spent time at the Texas State Capitol, immersing themselves in the rich history of Texas and experiencing the facilities of our state government. The American Legion believes that an educated populace is crucial for the survival of American government. By teaching youth to understand and appreciate our democratic republic, America can remain strong and ensure our freedom for future generations. Boys State participants are nominated by American Legion Posts and high school officials based on specific eligibility requirements.

At Texas Boys State, Matthew Ard learned and followed the "Objectives of Boys State," which include:

  • Developing civic leadership and pride in American citizenship, with the hope that each young man will return to his community a better citizen, willing to make greater civic contributions.
  • Fostering a keen interest in government.
  • Instilling a full understanding of American traditions and belief in the United States of America, teaching the glorious traditions of this country.
  • Encouraging a determination to maintain our form of government.

Additionally, two objectives from the Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion were emphasized:

  • "To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state, and nation."
  • "To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy."

Throughout the week, Matthew developed effective leadership and team-building skills, which were put to use during their time creating "cities" and "parties" in Texas and working towards the betterment of those cities through legislation and political parties. When not actively working on government skills, the boys competed in a talent show, marching band, and athletic events, creating lifelong memories. Matthew described Texas Boys State as the "best week of my life!" and hopes to return one day as a counselor.

Each delegate returned home to address the American Legion Post, thanking them for the opportunity to participate and sharing their experiences. Matthew Ard is an exemplary representation of Silsbee, the American Legion, and the ideals of Texas Boys State.

Previously, Harlan Self (Class of 2024) represented Silsbee.
