SHS Patient Care Tech practicum students attend orientation at Baptist Hospitals of SETX

August 31, 2023 - Silsbee High School students in the Patient Care Technician practicum class wrap up their orientation at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas. Next up for students is clinical rotations which begin next week.

During orientation, students hear from Jana Freeman and Vicky Holcomb discussed important topics pertaining to HIPAA, infection control, emergency situations, patient safety, and hospital protocols. Students also toured different units including imaging,  ekg/echo, labor and delivery, mother/baby, NICU, wound care, infusion center, surgery center, and the JB Cancer Center where they will participate in direct patient care and apply skills learned in the PCT program. All important information as they work towards achieving their certification for PCT.

The learning didn't stop there, students also viewed the simulation labs where Baptist Hospital instructors help incoming nurses fine tune their assessment skills before being assigned to a unit. 

"We are so thankful for this opportunity and the experience our students will receive to prepare them for their future careers in health care," said Mrs. Heather D. Wiggins, BSN-RN, teachers for the SHS Patient Care Tech program.

To finish the day, Baptist Hospital provided meal vouchers for the students.

The PCT program kicks off it's second year at Silsbee High School.
