SHS Patient Care Tech Students begin Spring Clinicals in the Community

FEBRUARY 5, 2025 - Silsbee High School Patient Care Technician students participated in their Spring Clinical rotations hosted by Silsbee Diagnostic Group and Frazier Physical Therapy. Students get to experience the small town atmosphere of our community businesses.

Office Manager, Lindsay Lonion said they were doing great and were triaging on their own!

Per Molli McCoy:

"I took vital signs, called patience back, took weights and heights, and eventually did full appointments. I asked patients if they needed medication refills and which ones they needed, I assest problems they were having and asked how these problems affect their life. I also printed papers, did 3 360 appointments, and learned how to work with patience who are sometimes difficult and only come in to cause problems. The nurses presented great professionalism and it was a great learning experience."

Per Kaydence Teal-Hansen:

"At the Diagnostic Group, I was able to get the full experience of working in a smaller clinic and working with the nurses. I got to go into the room and ask the patient questions about what pharmacy they use, changes to their medications, refills on medications, ask why they were in the clinic, and questions about their condition. I then got to take vitals. I had to take both manual blood pressures and on a machine which gave me a variety of ways to check the patients health. I also experienced the nurses remain professional in a situation where they were getting talked down to and insulted. This situation showed me that you should always treat your patient with respect even if they cross lines because you don't understand what the patient is going through."

Brooke and Mallory were at Frazier Physical Therapy.

Nolan said they were doing a fantastic job and were assessing vital signs and were able to sit in on an physical therapy work up for new patients. He was very happy to have our students and stated he loved being a part of helping the future of physical therapy and Silsbee PCT program.

Per Brooke Rodgers:

"At physical therapy I was able to perform blood pressure and take a person's pulse. I was able to learn a lot about physical therapy and all of the things they do like dry needling and the exercises they do. I was able to sit in on an evaluation and all of my questions were answered by the people. All of the people were very nice and made sure to teach us about what they were doing and why they were doing it. I had a great time learning and getting to see what physical therapy actually does for people.

Per Mallory Harper:

"At the physical therapy office Brooke and I observed many different exercise to help patients who had knee/hip replacements, joint pain, and other surgeries. I learned that the hip flexor could cause pain in the lower body and the upper body if not stretched properly. Also, I observed the PT perform dry needling, which helps promote blood flow to the injured area. Overall, the PT office was a great environment, as the employees have a great connection with the patients and were very welcome to us. They were very nice to talk to and genuinely love their job."

From triaging patients to assisting with physical therapy evaluations, these students are gaining invaluable skills while working alongside professionals in our community.
