Silsbee ISD Teachers Participate in Teacher Externship This Summer

June 5, 2024 – Four teachers from Silsbee ISD had the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Teacher Externship Program. Michelle Weichert, Casey Green-Sundgren, Heather Wiggins, and Michelle Drake immersed themselves in learning about the skills, technologies, and practices prevalent in different industries such as petrochemical, healthcare, and manufacturing across Southeast Texas.

Casey Green-Sundgren, who teaches science at Edwards-Johnson Memorial Silsbee Middle School, shared her enthusiasm, stating, “I loved this experience because I gained a comprehensive understanding of how a refinery operates. I am excited to share this knowledge with my students and introduce them to the various opportunities in STEAM careers.”

The Teacher Externship, presented by Workforce Solutions of Southeast Texas, is an annual event designed to empower teachers for the upcoming school year. The program aims to align their instructional methods with the demands of the job market and help develop relevant curriculum content. This alignment includes creating lesson plans that benefit students interested in pursuing local careers.

Heather Wiggins, a Health Science teacher at Silsbee High School, also expressed her appreciation, saying, “I really enjoyed this experience a lot! Although I graduated from LU Nursing in 2010, I was excited to learn all the new programs and resources available to students to ensure student success in the program, like The Caring Place.”

This year, our teachers not only participated in the externship but also had the honor of being presenters, sharing their insights and experiences with their peers.
