Smurfit Westrock Awards $10,000 Grant to Support Silsbee High School Animal Science Program

Smurfit Westrock Awards $10,000 Grant to Support Silsbee High School Animal Science Program

October 22, 2025 - The Silsbee High School Animal Science Program is taking hands-on learning to the next level thanks to a generous $10,000 grant from Smurfit Westrock in Evadale.

This funding will support the creation of a new small animal care facility, giving students a dedicated space to practice skills in grooming, animal handling, breeding, and sanitation — all critical components of careers in animal science, veterinary medicine, and agriculture.

The Silsbee High School Animal Science Program prepares students for careers in animal care, veterinary medicine, and related agricultural fields by providing real-world experiences aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards. The program emphasizes animal health, safe handling, nutrition, and career readiness through certifications and practical application.

During the 2024–2025 school year, 40 students earned industry-based certifications, including:

  • Elanco Fundamentals of Animal Science Certification
  • NHJCTA Equine Management Certification
  • Elanco Veterinary Medical Applications Certification (to be introduced in the 2025–2026 school year)

Many of these certifications rely on hands-on practice, and this new facility will provide just that. Plans include two major program initiatives:

  1. Dog Washing and Grooming Training Station: Students in Small Animal Management and Veterinary Medical Applications courses will gain experience in animal handling, bathing, and grooming, helping them master industry standards and TEKS objectives.
  2. Rabbit Care and Breeding Program: Students will learn about breeding systems, neonatal care, record keeping, and humane animal management. This program also provides opportunities for students to participate in livestock shows, even if they lack the space to raise larger animals at home.

The grant funds will be used to purchase and renovate a portable building, which will include insulation, plumbing, climate control, and interior renovations such as pens and kennels. Once completed, the facility will serve as a safe, functional learning space for students and a potential hub for community service projects, such as student-led dog washing events or partnerships with local animal shelters.

Agriculture teacher David Eller, who spearheaded the proposal, said this project will open doors for students and strengthen the program’s long-term impact.
This new facility will allow our students to develop real-world, career-ready skills in animal care and management. We’re incredibly thankful to Smurfit Westrock for believing in our program and helping us create opportunities that will serve students and the community for years to come.

The Silsbee ISD community extends its sincere appreciation to Smurfit Westrock for their continued support of education and student success. Their generosity helps ensure that Tiger students not only meet academic standards but also build practical skills that prepare them for the future.
