Tigers bulldoze their way to the area playoffs
NOVEMBER 18, 2019–The Silsbee Tigers improved to 6-4 on the season after a dominating win over Shepherd 52-13 in a class 4A-Division II bidistrict playoff held in Dayton on Friday, Nov. 15.
Silsbee's three-headed monster running attack and dominance in the trenches was the difference in the game led by senior running back Chris Martin who finished with 172 yards on six carries, two rushing TDs and two interceptions on defense.
After a 42-yard field goal by Diego Gonzalez, Martin stalled a productive Shepherd drive, picking off the QB at the Pirate's goalline and returning the INT to the Shepherd 26-yard line.
The Tigers moved the ball on the ground and capped the drive with a 1-yard buck by QB Raymond Foster. Foster also tacked on a 2-point run to give the Tigers an 11-0 advantage after one quarter.
Shepherd made a game of it and scored on a 9-yard run with 9:19 in the second quarter to cut the Tigers' lead 11-7.
On Silsbee's first play from scrimmage after the kickoff, Martin juked his way to an open seam and found the end zone on a 62-yard scamper to help give Silsbee an 18-7 advantage.
Antonius Arline added a 29-yard TD run after a Shepherd punt to put the Tigers in control 25-7 with 6:30 in the second quarter.
After Martin's second INT in the second quarter, Foster connected with Dylan Colvin on a 37-yard pass to extend the Silsbee lead 32-7.
Martin added a 65-yard run with 1:09 in the second quarter to put the Tigers in complete control 39-7 at the half.
Senior Dralyn Taylor added a 3-yard run and Arline topped the scoring with a 3-yard run of his own.
The win propels Silsbee into the 4A-D2 area playoff game against Smithville, 34-28 winners over Sweeny.
Smithville (7-4) finished in fourth place in District 12-4A-D2 behind Giddings, Bellville, and La Grange.
