FINAL ‘FIRST’ FINANCIAL RATING FROM STATE RATES SILSBEE SUPERIOR ‘A’, DISTRICT RECEIVES PERFECT SCORE

DECEMBER 14, 2021 – Silsbee Independent School District received an ‘A’ on the state’s final School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST). This means the district scored 100/100 which is a Superior rating.

In August, the state sent out preliminary ratings and SISD received a Superior A. After further review, the state did not make changes to the district’s final score.

"Achieving a perfect score for the School FIRST rating system is a tremendous accomplishment for the district," said Superintendent Dr. Gregg Weiss.

According to the TEA, the state's school financial accountability rating system, known as the School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST), ensures that Texas public schools are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices and that they improve these practices. The system is designed to encourage Texas public schools to better manage their financial resources to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes.

Silsbee ISD Director of Business and Finance is Tricia Brooks.

"I am extremely proud of our financial accounting department led by our Director of Business and Finance, Ms. Tricia Brooks," said Dr. Weiss, “considering the General Fund Balance was less than $5 million dollars prior to the 2018-2019, we’ve made great strides to improve our financial efficiency and accounting practices."

Prior to Dr. Weiss’ arrival in 2019, Silsbee ISD scored a rating of “C” for the schools years of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. A rating of “C” means the district “Meets Standard”. For the school years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, Silsbee ISD has achieved “A” ratings which is considered Superior Achievement. The highest rating a school district can achieve.

In addition to receiving a perfect School FIRST rating, the district also received excellent financial news from Pat Oneal with Wathen, DeShong & Junker, financial auditors for Silsbee ISD. Mr. Oneal reported that Silsbee has had two favorable years financially. The district Fund Balance has now raised to an all-time high of $12,934,061.

"The increased Fund Balance will provide greater stability for the district and allows us to not only strengthen our student programs, but also retain and attract the best teachers and staff," said Dr. Weiss.

According to Dr. Weiss, the last time Silsbee ISD had a perfect score was based on the 2013-2014 school year data and was only measured on 7 basic indicators.

"We are now measured on 19-20 indicators," explained Dr. Weiss.
